RECENT ARTICLE ABOUT DeLEON'S OUTPOST:
"WORKING WONDERS IN WOOD", by John Hallowell, appearing in the Winter 2007 Edition of Hill Country Magazine, page 116. www.hillcountrymagazine.com
Lewis DeLeon has a great Hill Country business. He not only clears ranchland of the pesky cedar that threatens to overwhelm it, but he uses the cedar that he clears for many useful and artistic items.
DeLeon was born and raised in the little town of Leakey, on the Frio River at the western edge of the Hill Country. When he was in his twenties, he got into the land clearing business, and began selling cedar posts for fences. He moved to Johnson City about 20 years ago, and opened a cedar yard. He gradually got into the post-peeling business, and began supplying furniture makers; soon they were selling furniture for the manufacturers they supplied. When there were problems with the style and quality of the furniture, he decided to start making it himself.
Well, not exactly. “I don’t build the furniture myself,” he explains. “I hire good people to build it the way I want it.” Now his business has come full circle, and he buys wood from suppliers: aromatic cedar from East Texas, and mesquite from South Texas. And while most of his business still involves clearing ranchland and selling cedar posts (not just for fences -- “We peel a lot of posts for porches, too.” Deleon says), DeLeon’s Outpost (as he calls his shop on Hwy 281) is somewhat like an art gallery, with amazing creations in beautiful wood. Whether it’s furniture, mantles, lamps, wall art or jewelry boxes; DeLeon’s has all that and more. Next time you travel Hwy 281, or even if you have to make a special trip, you’ll enjoy stopping at DeLeon’s Outpost in Johnson City.
